The most common fiber optic contacts were conventionally in size 16, and the thinnest contacts were commercialized up to size 21.

*Advantages
Because the fiber optic contact is thinner, it allows using smaller shell size contact than conventional size 16 or size 21, which makes it possible to downsize communication devices.

As MIL-C-38999 circular connectors are used in aircraft, the downsizing of devices significantly benefits equipment manufacturers.
It’s possible to use a fiber optic contact and an electric contact simultaneously to MIL-C-38999 contacts if there’s not enough space to add a fiber optic connector.
